Games Development

Introduction -Purpose of my game

The purpose of my game is to make players enjoy it and to have fun whilst playing, the game is addictive and to let them have an experience of being on an island with zombies. The game feels like a fake reality and players won't get to into it so it actually affects their real life. You can chose to have a gun armed also to the character 'Mr.Crabby' who you are controlling. I got my idea from using market research to look where I could create a game which isn't on the market yet and how I could impact the market and fill the gaps.

What is a brief?

Different Briefs

Contractual briefs- a contractual brief is a legal document, which is made between an employee and a client. it outlines the duties that will be required by the company, and how the company organises their work. it is a document which states expectations of the client, the prices they will agree and decide on, as well as the payment.

How this could help me- This could help me by making my brief a more legal document and show the audience how the company organises its work. This would engage more with the audience and create a better relationship.

Formal Brief- a formal brief is a document which includes detailed information about what the client wants the company to achieve. this is usually a easy and clear document, which refrains from including any unwanted information. the brief itself may not always be classified as a legal document.

How this could help me- This could help me because I could show how I want the company and product to do, it is a simple and easy to make also which would save more time.

Informal brief- a informal brief is a less professional than that of a traditional brief, where it outlines the project verbally, as this particular type of brief does not require any means of a written document. there is a discussion conducted between the client and the employer , where they will come to a general agreement over the details of the contract.

How this would help me- This would save time and will show the conversation between the client and the employer, and show the agreement that has taken place.

Enterprise skill research

Enterprise Skills

I watched an episode of the apprentice and noted all of the enterprise skills the entrepreneurs were using.
Portfolio in Enterprise Skills

Using these enterprise skills will help me develop my understanding of enterprise and will give me more ideas on how to use these to help me sell the product. Using these will also make my product look more professional and sleeker. Looking more professional will also help me sell the product and get more people playing/using my game. It helps me develop my understanding on market research and also gives me ideas on how to make it more appealing and gives me ideas on what price I should chose to make my game. I will use a range of different websites/social media accounts to make my game more appealing for different people.

Popplet Ideas

Popplet Game Ideas

In this idea mind-map I have stated different genres and different games I would like to create. I have said how long they will be playable for (if there is an ending in the game) I have used primary and secondary research to see what genres and what games are more popular and I looked at ones have potential to be good but need some work to get there. I decided to go for a 3D FPS/Survival game therefore it will make my game popular as they are popular types of game I saw using market research, I thought a quiz or maze game would be successful at the start but would then start to drop in popularity as more and more people complete it and then the answers will be out on the web and easily found. Also on maze and quiz games they can get very boring quickly which will then change the amount of time people spend on that also. I decided on the game i wanted to make using creative and innovative thinking to make it unique and popular at the same time, I wanted to take elements out of the popular games and input them into mine using a special and clever way, whether that may be Easter eggs or just including them from the start, I researched if people like a strong story line or if they like it to be like the butterfly effect where there choices change the future in the game and the audience said butterfly effect. That is another big feature in popular games which are similar to mine. Saying that is another example of market research and looking at my competition on the market. I started of making these mind maps without using some enterprise skills like market research and creative and innovative thinking which made my ideas very similar to other games which would of made my game not successful enough to get profits, so then I proceeded to add creative and innovative thinking which changed my game and made it very unique, I then got peers to evaluate the differences and asked them if they could leave feedback telling me tips and improvements which I could then implant into my game to make it even more special and unique. That is me using teamwork in the planning and pre-production stages of my game.

Peer Assessment

By Tom Hordle - Your blog has some  information about the similar games to your game. You have also included your game idea and what your game will be about.

2 Improvements- Write more information about questionnaire and give it a cool background

Final Idea

Storyline-

You are controlling MR.Crabby who has been stranded on an island and will have to change his way of living and will prioritise keeping himself alive. You will find food, cook and boil water to make it clean. Set traps and destroy enemies to stay safe and alive. Make a fire and shelter to keep warm and dry, scare of any zombies who may want to hunt you. MR.Crabby used to be a very successful businessman until he once went on a kayak ride in the sea when the seas and weathers changed dramatically and unfortunately left him on an infested zombie island. You start of with nothing losing your kayak and all items with you in sea. The game will be targeted at teenagers specifically 15 year old males. It will be played on PC and be sold at a price of £9.99, sold on steam.

Why My idea is unique.

My idea is unique because although it is similar to 'H1Z1', 'DAYZ' and 'The Forest' there are many aspects which are different to aspects on the similar games, such as that it is a first person survival game, to stay alive, take food, cook, drink, kill and heal yourself. I done secondary research and primary research to help also make my game differ to the others.

How I will achieve my idea.

Because this is an idea I will try my best to achieve all the aspects of killing zombies, eating and cooking the food to achieve that. I feel like my knowledge is not to a high standard to make all of those aspects using unity as it is my first time using Unity. I watch Unity tutorials to get a feel for the service and then start to create my own unique game using my ideas and what I want my game to be like

H1Z1- 'H1Z1: Just Survive' is a survival sandbox massively multiplayer online game in development by Daybreak Game Company for Microsoft Windows. The gameplay emphasizes on multiplayer cooperation, trading, and team-building.In an interview with Adam Clegg from Sony Online Entertainment, he made clear that unlike other zombie massively multiplayer online games, the main focus will be about surviving against the zombies through teamwork with other players, rather than having a (PvP) environment with zombies as a backdrop. I like the way the game has a big environment with zombies and the way they have used broken down abandoned buildings to help make the look of the game and enviroment like an apocalypse.

H1Z1: I think that H1Z1 is very similar to my game as it has the same open world aspect and zombie killing aspect like mine. Therefore there are many unique features in my game and many unique features in H1Z1 which makes the games different. e.g. My game has a beach and on an island when H1Z1 doesn't have either of those.I like the big open world and the zombie aspect which i will use for inspiration. The strengths of the game is that the graphics are really good and the game flows really well. The weaknesses of the game is that the story is very long and dragged out, it can also get boring as there inst a lot of different factors to keep you playing and drawn in. H1Z1 is only sold online and will be my biggest competitor in the markets, although my game is very similar to this, Easter eggs and other special elements make both games very different.

The Forest-The Forest is a first-person open world-survival video game developed by Canadian company Endnight Games for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 4. The game's pre-alpha version was released through Steam Early Access on May 30, 2014.The game takes place on a heavily forested island where the player character and a young child are the survivors of a plane crash. I think that 'The Forest' is the best game out of these examples of games like mine. The strengths of the game is that it is very addictive and has brilliant graphics alongside a good storyline, if the game could be improved the speed of the game mechanisms could be improved.

The Forest: Is also a game like mine as it also includes open world, first person survival game.

DAYZ-DayZ is an open world survival video game currently in development by Bohemia Interactive. It is the stand-alone successor version of the award-winning mod of the same name. It is an open world environment game video game currently in development by Bohemia. It is the stand-alone successor version of the award-winning mod of the same game. The game was released for Microsoft Windows via early access on Steam on December 16, 2013.

I used market research and secondary research to look at games which are similar to my idea and to see what is on the market, I then used personal, deliberate and creative thinking to impact the market and to give me a good, unique idea which will fit into the market and will be successful.

Interview

Q&A analysis

I have done a questionnaire that people have answered and helped me chose on how to be more appealing to the audience and the people have told me what they like and what they don't like in games. I also looked at many ways in how myself can compete in the market with my competitors out there.(Games similar to mine).

Questionnaire results and analysis

Asking this question gives me a good idea who is answering the question and can show me if the questionnaire is going to be biased, In my questionnaire I have 10 more male than female answering the question. This is helping my idea of making my target audience to males.
Again I asked a personal question of their age, this also helps me set out for a target audience which will be a male teenager.
I asked this also to help me see what the feedback I am getting shows me what games the people are interested in most, helps with my ideas.
In this one I had 4 people say they prefer single player and 2 multiplayer , this supports my idea of making a single player game.
The people here wanted a FPS and Freeroam game and supports my idea of making a game with single player game which is an FPS/Free Roam.
I wanted to make a 3D game and the feedback I received here showed that I should.

Questionnaire analysis

On my questionnaire, I asked questions to different age ranges and different genders, I did this to help me get a range of different samples for my game. This will help me see if my game will be successful and see if my target audience is a good age for my game, the enterprise skill i have used here is primary research, I used this because the research I get is reliable and I have got the answers I want for my game research. In my questionnaire, I asked a question which is 'Do you buy a game because of the popularity or because you see the trailers and it appeals to you?' I asked this as my game isn't popular but most of my feedback said they would see the trailers and if they like the look of it that way then they will buy it that way. I specifically used that question as primary research because it is about my game and i will need to know what the players and the audience do if they see my game being advertised. Most people also said they like playing FPS and Free roam games the most, this then cements my idea of making the game that way because my game is going to be a Free roam game with an aspect of FPS to it also.Using this shows my primary research, which backs the use of qualitative research which is another example of my use of enterprise research.

Game Brief- The Searching

Idea and summary of game

My idea is a 3D survival island game. You are a first person character who travels around the island trying to stay alive, finding food and water and fighting enemies to keep alive.

I think that if I develop this idea in a good way then the game will be good and enjoyable to play, I also think that this is a unique game and will be very fun to play alone.

This is a unique game as it is very fun and different to games like it because of the different assets will make it unique to other games like it.

My target audience is 12+ because of the surviving aspect of the game.I chose 11+ because of the zombies in the game and I think the game isn't too bloody or there isn't any bad language of bad behavior placed in the game.

The skills I will need to complete this is knowledge of the software to make the game which is 'Unity' and how to use assets and set the game up correctly.

My game will be made and created on Unity. There will be no soundtrack in the game so the player can be more immersed into a solo, survival life-style. The controls on the game are very easy to use and they are the WASD keys on keyboard or the arrow keys, the mouse will be used to look around as it is a FPS and the space bar key will be to jump, using the mouse you can click on the food/drink which are highlighted and then you can choose to place in the inventory or to eat/drink at that current moment. The enterprise skill I used here was deliberate thinking, I used this and looked at the three games similar to mine, to see what I could do differently and I had to also use problem solving because at the start I thought my ideas were to similar to the games. I started slowly which drawed me back and made me get a little behind in my work, I then started to use prioritisation and time management which helped me work better and quicker then I caught up and started to work better to a schedule.

Perception/Tone/Guidelines

1.Exciting get people to enjoy the game.

2.Unique, promotion of the game.

3.Use different games and compare.

4.Information should be clear and understandable.

5.Follow age guidelines.

Competitive Positioning-

'The searching' has many competitors on the market to be the best and most successful first person survival game out there, like 'DAY-Z' 'H1Z1' and 'The Forest' these are the most successful ones but there are many on the market, highlighting how my game is different and unique will definitely give me advantages and be a good way to compete with my market opposition. Using clear market strategy will also show ways of how my game is better than ones out there.

Single-Minded Message- Let the search, search.

How the brief will meet the requirements.

The brief will be discussing what the planning and the project will be based around, this includes the idea, objectives and target audience. The target audience need to make sure that they have an interest in the product that I have been making so there is an increased chance that they will purchase the product from the online web store: A method of shipping copies without requiring a physical delivery and copy of the product. Overall the brief needs to show what is happening from the company. I used creative and innovative thinking and deliberate thinking to make my ideas and game unique, I did market research to see what the gaps in the market would be and how my game can fit those gaps which would then make it successful.

Game in Production

Sketches of health bar ideas

Above you can see four different sketches of health bars I created. In my game I chose to go with the last sketch, as in my opinion it looks simple and suttle, I didn't want to create such a hard and detailed health bars because then I don't think I would of been able to complete the task before the deadlines, I also thought that a simple design would look good also as it does the job and creates a survival game theme. I used time management and problem solving to then complete the task before the deadline, if I didn't use the enterprise skills in this task I dont think I would of completed it before the deadline.

Screenshots of my game

This photo is a picture looking away from the beach side over the views and looking at the mountains and grass. This view has a good look of the large horizon of the environment and the way environmental changes throughout the game.

This picture is a 1st person view and in game picture including the gun armed to the player.

Here also you can see the size of the gun and a 1st person view of the game.

What my game is about.

Firstly I will research other games and decide what game I would want to make and chose the genre of the game. Then see what I would want to include in my game and what audience I want my game to be for and how I will achieve making a game for a target audience. My game is going to be an open world 3D first person character camera. The objective of the game is to simply stay alive, eat and drink kill enemies and see what you can build and how long you can stay alive for.The scenery included will include a range of sea land and have a beach. The way you control the player is with keyboard and mouse, mouse is to look around and you use the keyboard (arrow keys) to move the character. I will soon add that you have to eat and drink to keep yourself alive for longer, you will have to hunt, cook and fight to keep yourself. I think this is unique and will really help me on the market against opponents, I used market research and creative and innovative thinking to make my game different and to see what is needed on the market.

The pictures are just a small portion of what is in my game as it includes a large beach with sea water and creates an real-life experience for the gamers. It includes land and other aspects of the real-life experience for the players. This shows how my game differs from other games which may be similar to mine. This is market research which links to another enterprise skill because it shows my competition against other games. I used planning in the production of my product, I made rough sketches and ideas on what my game would look like as a concept art, so then I can visualize everything. I think this skill is useful and means I am able to plan and save ideas I might want to input into my game.

Good: The game looks really good and it runs very well when playing with no lag. I like the concept of your game even tho at the moment you have made a demo/play through but the final idea is interesting.

Bad: I think you could've added in more stuff in the world like houses and enemies to kill to make it a bit more interesting  than just running around and looking at trees. Also I think you should try and code some of the weapons so they can work.

Improvements:  Try and do some coding/scripting for the game

What i think of the feedback: I think that Toms feedback is correct and I do need to add coding/scripting into the game but that is what i'm hoping to do in the future of improving this game.

By Lee Howarth - His game is really good , the aspects of the eating and the health bars work , is another good element in the game , add enemies if possible.

Enterprise Research

Aim of My Research

The aim of my research is to use the research to make my game better and use the ideas of other games to influence mine and to create it better.

Why am I researching?

I am researching because it will help me get a higher grade and make my game better, it will develop my understanding of different types of games and how to make them more professional and appealing. Research will help my walkthrough of my game better.

What should be included in my research?

Included in my research should be things like other FPS games and open world environment games and ideas like that because that is the game I want to create at the end. The other FPS games I am using, I must not copy because otherwise I am just creating the same game and it won't be unique, so I am taking ideas and changing them to what I want to make better then making my own game unique and better than other games like it.

Youtube Secondary Research

These source are found on the video website Youtube. This will not be the only website however since there are forum and the unity domain itself. This is an example of secondary source because I have not obtained this myself: provided by the content creators and youtube.

Market Research.

Market research is one of the most important parts of research as if you make the price too cheap, you will be losing money and if you make it too expensive not many people will buy the game so you will just not make any money, so therefore you have to make it balanced price so you will be making a good amount of money whilst the customers are happy. The market research i have done is see how much games like mine roughly cost and what the feedback on those games was so i can put the improvements into my game and make it be better and unique. I used critical thinking to help me look at other games in the markets and see how they have been so successful.

Primary Research.

The primary research that I had  done was the questionnaire which can be found above the brief, this was just to make sure what idea I can base my game around depending on the trend of genres that are popular on the market currently. An enterprise skill that I should use is commercial awareness and this means I am able to adapt my ideas around the audience and this means that I won't be creating a product that people do not want.

Secondary Research.

The secondary research I have done is getting ideas of other games like mine and copied some of the ideas that were good but didn't go to plan in there game and to see if I could execute them better. I have watched Youtube videos on how to make an exciting game and how to actually create it, although I haven't copied them. I looked at the markets out there where i could distribute my game and what one would be the best for me. I decided to sell it online as it easier and better to use for the buyers of my game. In order to get these sources of data I had used a search engine and a vary of websites that contain the secondary research which is similar to my product idea. This enterprise skill I had used in this task is critical thinking because than I am able to analyse these different sources and see how they had become successful or unsuccessful. However secondary research can end up having a few problems because the sources and research could be heavily biased or unreliable. If the research was then unreliable or biased I had to then use another enterprise skill which was problem solving, to resolve the error and edit it to help my research and product. Using secondary data does save time as you don't have to do it yourself which is why I used it on a few tasks to help me as I didn't have much time to finish a task so I used another enterprise skill, time management, it is obvious that my ability to use time management helped complete the task in time, otherwise I would be unsure if I would've completed it in time. Secondary research helped me get a better idea of what I want in my game.

Reflection on Psycho Profile

I made a psycho profile to show a more detailed and specific individual which is in my target audience, the profile shows the most popular people who is likely to play my game the most, my primary research I have done also shows that my audience would fit this individual.

Unity Web Player | New Unity Project 4

Unity Web Player. Install now!
Unity Web Player. Install now! Restart your browser after install.

I think that the game is very unique and good, I will need to add enemies and develop my game to improve it and make it better and add more features to make it less boring. I think right now that my game is good so far at its current stage. It has some realistic features like the ocean and small lakes and grass. I think my target audience is a good age for people to play and has good features in for people that age range to enjoy.I started making the game on Unity 4.6.1 and since then the software has been updated to Unity 5.1.1 and that means I had to update my whole game which took some time away from creating enemies and other features I wanted to input into my game at this stage. An enterprise skill that I can use which is problem solving will help me able to create these enemies for the new version of the unity engine, if a type of code that I had previously used does not work with this version then a new code will be needed as a whole.

Digital Enterprise Skills Evaluation

During Unit 7, I used 'Peer Assessment' to help me with getting feedback from peers (my classmates) help me see if my idea is successful or not. I achieved this by checking my gantt chart regularly throughout working. This will help me complete all my tasks before the deadline is over.

Also in Unit 7 I used 'leadership' to let myself chose what idea I want and how I can be successful using leadership, I have used leadership to help me ask others to peer assess and ask them how they feel about my idea.

Another skill I used in Unit 7 was 'commercial awareness' I completed this by using 'market research' to help me complete the task well and give me a lot of information about similar games like mine and how I could be successful making and selling this game.

therefore I moved on to a task which is 'testing and evaluating' my peers work and seeing what is successful from their game and how i could use that to benefit my work, and to make my game improve throughout time.

Again in Unit 7 I used a skill called 'flexibility' I used this to help my blog look better and use a range of different technologies to help me complete the game well.Flexibility is also used well to create different technologies and use them as my advantage.

I used 'Presentation skills' to let my peers understand well and clearly what I wanted them to do and how I created my game, I used different presentations to clear all the 'grey areas' and split all of the different subjects into different presentations to make them more understandable to my classmates.

I have also used 'Communication' to help me use my classmates feedback to say if they thought my work was good or if I should make improvements on my game.

In Unit 7 I have also used 'problem solving' to help me bypass any problems that I came across in the game development. Like 'coding' and copyright problems to pass these problems I googled ways of how to pass it.

Where will my game be distributed?

My game will be distributed on the main site , STEAM, but will also be distributed out online on websites like , G2A, Amazon, GAME. These are all places where many people are looking to buy there games, which means it's on the top of the market. Selling the game online has advantages like the gamer will be able to buy the game from anywhere on the planet at anytime. It is a very quick process also and it doesn't take time out of the buyers day where they will have to take time out of there day for. I think that because of the popularity on where my game is being distributors then that will affect the popularity of my game, therefore I chose the popular shops to use in my advantage to get more sales and customers on my game. I used market research here to see where manufactures of games similar to mine was being sold so I could compare how successful they were to my target. Using research I have gathered shows me I have used commercial awareness because I know the game genres and where mine needs to be sold.

I used planning in this task to help me be more aware and to have a better knowledge of the markets out there. I planned all the different outcomes from using different places where my game will be distributed, online is more convenient way to sell and there will be more buyers which equals to more profits but in shops on the shelf's equals to more recognition which equals to future funds and popularity, therefore it was a hard choice but my decision was to with online,  this is because a lot of my opponents in the market stock it on the shelf's, furthermore that leads to less buyers online for them, if customers then look online for that game and then they cant find it, they will then go for mine as it is the most similar to the game. Also collaborationg with these popular websites mean my product might then feature on a advert which then leads to more customers , collaborating is another enterprise skill I have input here.

Health bars and screenshots of my game.

This is the page that comes up on the screen, when the players health has came to the bottom, it shows the game over screen as the health bar is empty, which then means the player is now dead, and it is game over. When it is game over you can wait for 10 seconds which then it spawns you back into the start of the game, where you spawn normally, but you have no inventory because that is where you died, if you do not return back to the location of the death then the objects will disappear after 5 minutes. In this task I used creative thinking and deliberate thinking to help my game be unique compared to other games on the market which are similar to mine, if I didn't use these I think my game would of looked to similar to the games which are like mine.

Feedback from Public

I have used primary research here, this then helps give me different opinions and reviews on my game from people of different ages and gender, this then helps me improve my game and gives me feedback on what I can do to make it better. Using primary research also gives me a good advantage because there feedback is about my game compared to using secondary research where it could not be reliable or actually personal about my game.

Name: David Jones

Age: 32

Review: I think the game runs really well and has a good narrative to it, the health bars are simple but effective as they dont look over the top but they are nice and suttle. I think your game is different to others on the market and is good for different ages of people, for that reason I think your game will be a success and be good on the market.

Improvements: You could add some 'Easter eggs' to add some mystery, that will make your game even more unique.

Name: Clare Fuller

Age: 21

Review: As a person who doesn't play games , this one was very fun to play, it isn't really a game most girls would enjoy but I can see why it will be very successful, it is addictive and at times I forgot it is a game based for 12+ boys, It is a family friendly game, where there isn't gore, or use of bad language and for those reasons I think your game will be very successful.

Improvements: In my opinion I think you should chose what character you want to be, a choice of gender would improve the game.

Name: Brenda Wallis

Age: 67

Review: I think this is a sort of game the younger generation would enjoy, if I was to play computer games , this is an example of one I would enjoy, as I enjoy creating things and having challenges that this game would bring.

Improvements: I would prefer not to have zombies on the island, as it isn't realistic, but as to having to keep yourself healthy and alive, in order to, hopefully be rescued appeals to me.

Copyright

Copyright Infringement can be an issue in the market because the ideas are not original and the consequences can result in paying the original creators of the work. This can also give your company or position a bad reputation especially on the market, customers will not be interested in a brand that cannot make their own ideas for a product. I'm not worried because there was no use of copyright in the production of my game, I know this because the ideas were inspired from the different titles but I did not directly extract them, my own ideas that I had made from a visual presentation is one method for example the different indicators for the UI were laid out in four different designs, this can also include the map and the storyline behind the game.

Gantt Chart

Using a gantt chart helps me stay to a schedule and use the time management which then helps me complete tasks on time and keeps on a schedule.

Evaluation 2

In this project, I setted out my target to get a game with working health bars which change if you eat, drink or get hurt, I have achieved that by using a canvas on Unity which helps make the health bars.In my time making this game I had to overcome a problem in the coding using problem solving, I was using coding but the game would still not do what I asked. I then looked on the internet why  this problem has came up and the internet game me a very good answer which then helped me to beat and overcome the problem with coding in my game.I think the game looks good, and it runs well also, throughout my time making the game I have became better at using Unity and for the reasons above I think my game is unique on the market and therefore will be more popular than some of the cliche games which are my opposition on the market. In my game I was unable to complete some of the elements in my game like getting the zombies health correctly because the damage on health. This was another time I had to conquer problem solving ,the zombies health wasn't working when you hurt them so the health would decrease.   .The research I have done has thoroughly helped me be more comfort in the market I am competing in, the secondary research will help me be better at making my game more unique to the my oppositions but I have looked at things what gamers like in games, which I have tried to input into my game using new elements in it also. So the final outcome is that I think my game has been a success making and will do very well out on the market.
