Charateristics

Concept art is used for video game and animations it usually ends in one artistic vision that helps show the franchise, this comes from the designers that want to express their ideas. Concept art is a form of pre production and its purpose for (Within the games development industry) video games is the visualisations of the, character, weapons, landscapes and vehicles. There are a set of stages for the concept art which would get refined the further it enters a new one: Sketch will move onto 3D design and modelling if it meets the requirements, at times the product is changed due to contingency plans.

Materials in concept art

Concept art has became more digital recently and because of this more technology to help create better graphics or definition more packages have became available for concept artists, whether that is a programme which helps blends colours or a package that makes the art more clearer and sharper they all help improve the art on the game. Using packages like this can help me develop my understanding of concept art and help me improve my concept art also.

Purpose of concept art.

Characteristics of concept art.

These pictures should show how they are all different and have different target audiences and different genres. This then means they can all be used on some different platforms because there wide range of audiences.

Targeting Specific audiences by gender, age, type of gamer, e.g, ,casual, hardcore.

if I was making a game which included a lot of time of playing the game to get better at it i would target it at a male who plays games a lot and had a lot of free time. So that would be a hardcore male gamer who is around the age of 14.

Casual Gamer.

Gender:Male or Female

Game:GTA, Minecraft

Hardcore.

Gender:Male

Age:14

Game:Call of Duty,(shooter)(strategy)

Professional.

Gender:Male

Age:25

Game:FIFA,Call of Duty, most games

How are media, techniques and processors used to communicate ideas and messages in game ideas

This is how concept artists use colours to show emotions or feelings for example. Red can be used to show danger, love or death.White can be used to show innocence or normality. In this picture below you can see a range of colours and the small boy is emotionless this is a way of communicating media and the concept artist is using different techniques to get across the media communication and sending messages to the players who will play the game. This will also send out ethical messages to the players and make them use there initiative to what the colours imply to the gamers. The blue on the walls below could show that the room is calming and welcoming which show the emotions are calm and blank.

Concept artists can use body language in characters to show different techniques being used to show to the media and send out messages to players. They can also use different character emotions to send messages out also.

How does concept art relate to the game?

Concept art relates to the game because the first character drawings were made by the concept artist and then it has progressed onto the computer into 3D scale. This means that all the drawings start off,  on paper as a concept. They are then chosen one out of a few ideas. The chosen one is then improved and modified, it is then put into the computer and made into a 3D scale. They are then again modified better and changed on the 3D scale. Concept art is one of the most important features into making a games , characters and objects.

Developing Concept art

Above you can see developing concept art over stages the first three pictures are on paper and the last two pictures is when the pictures have been changed to be on PC and modified more realistically on there.

On the first picture you can see the concept artist has given the basic shape to the character and posture of the character. The second picture gives more shape and clothing and shading the character more to give the character more presence and making the features stand out more. The third picture has been cleaned up a lot of the rough edges and sketching lines to make the character stand out more and give him more of a realistic sense than just a drawing, at this stage the drawing is ready to be transferred to PC and modified more on there. The fourth picture is when the art is on PC and the colour starts to take shape, it makes the character look more realistic and more like an game character than just a simple sketch. The last picture is when the art is finished and all there is left to do is create different postures/stance of the character.

Use of materials and media for sketching, drawing and painting

Call Of Duty: Infinite Warfare

The concept art of 'Call of Duty**' is very realistic and the colours show a run down and broken dirty environment the picture includes a man the dog ,the colours also show that the emotions could be dull and bad but the dog and the man will always be there together to look after each other this could imply teamwork and to show the character only has one companion and it is his dog. This shows trust and love between the two. The way the sun is shining over the city show that the city is a good place to be and has an effect that the city is a happy place. The way the man and dog is a silhouette show that they aren't really special and are hiding in the shadows which goes back to the colours, the way the birds are flying over to the city shows that everyone wants to be in the city and also has a sense of feedback. The way the tree is hanging over shows that the environment is dying and also the colours are dark and dull. This relates back into the colour of the city and because it is bright shows that the city is full of life and has an impact of good quality of life. The difference between this concept art and the one below (Fifa 17) is that they are made using different techniques, this can give out different meanings and messages to the audience because they are made differently and some are made with more detail. The one below is more realistic and made using special cameras and editing on computers. The one above had been drawn and then transported into the computer.

Deconstruction of character concept drawing

The goblin monster in the picture above shows that the monster is an monster who lives in the forest type of environment because you can see the wood on his arm and the grass all over his body which shows he uses the environment to blend in with his skin to catch his prey. The 3 skulls attached to his body show that he is a killer and a dangerous creature. The huge shield on his shoulder shows that he is a fighter and must be attacked a lot and he uses the shield to block the impact. His massive claws and teeth show how he can rip apart an enemy in very quick time. The chain on his ear shows that he might of been trapped and used the chain to keep him under control but implies that he escaped it and ripped away from it.His massive muscular body shows that he is very strong and he uses them to give him an advantage over other oppositions.

Ideas for my concept art against the brief

The brief requires me to use a range of techniques to create weapons that would be found in a circus and a clown that looks like a clown, which is appropriate to be from North America, be rugged and unshaven, make-up smudged, the art below is what I have made to create a brief.

Clownin Around

This is my drawing of Alex 'Giggles' Malone, I did this in ink and this could impact the quality as i might of made a few mistakes which I can now not remove because of the permanent ink. I have also used the ink because it is darker than pencil and makes more of the features stand out. I included the criteria needed to make a clown which looked ragged and dirty. He was asked to be a 1960s clown which i have decided to stick to also.

The detail of the shading could be improved and the way the colours could be improved of the tone. The features of the clown have been done well.

This is my pencil drawing of the clown in the brief, again i have followed the brief and included the criteria of what the clown has to look like.

This drawing is in black ink and I used the cross hatching technique, again I have followed the requirements of the drawings.

This is only a small show of what my real clown could look like. This is another version/technique for the 'Clowin Around' game brief , the clown, Alex 'Giggles' Malone.

The pictures above were made in pixels , it is quicker and easier to make with piskels but the level of detail isnt as good as actual drawing. The drawings below were drawn and that makes the detail alot better and makes it look better.

Peer Assessment of Drawings.

Name: James Clark

Date: 2/2/17

Good: The third clown drawing has a great use of cross hatching which is located around the top and the sides of the face. Second weapon drawing shows a use of tonal techniques on the blade.

Bad: First weapon drawing doesn't really contain a lot of detail and the uses of techniques is bland.

Improvements: Try to finish other drawings or add some detail to make sure that there is some profile with them.

Name: Lee Howarth

Date: 02/02/2017

Good: The shading is good and i like the design on the knife.

Bad: You should have drawn it in pen.

Improvements: Get better at drawing in 3D.

Name: Jordan Perks

Date: 02/02/2017

Good: pictures are well drawn and show good detail. i like the clown faces they are good sketches

Bad: use more styles i guess or something. i would give you a 10/10

Improvements: different styles to use in the future.

Conceptual Meanings

This means that the colours , characters ,etc. and what they mean and why the provider has decided to put them into the game and what meanings they show across. inc, client, target audience, historical , cultural, social , political and ethical references, this can mean that if the game is based in the early 1900's and there was a black male and white male the white male would be dominant over the black male because at that time white people were more dominant. Likewise with Male and Females the females would be less dominant and would have to do what the man says. This means that the conceptual meanings are based on where and when the game is based at the time.

Types of Drawings

Tonal Drawing:

What is it?

Tonal drawings rely on the depth of colour, does not include colour includes the lightest white and the all the way to the darkest tone of black

Strengths:Shows the shading well and is an easy process.

Weaknesses:no other colour involved, hard to get all the detail.

Line Drawing:

What is it?

Line drawings consist of only lines to make up a drawings, does not involve blocks of shading.

Strengths:The detail you can create is good, although you can't go into a lot of detail.

Weaknesses: Takes a lot of time, can't go into detail a lot.

Cross Hatching:

What is it?

Intersecting double parallel lines, to create shading and shape.

Strengths: good to create shape and shading.

Weaknesses: not much detail of features

Examples of the drawings.

Hyper-realism

This is when the concept art is very realistic and is almost identical to real life.

Line Drawing

This is when straight lines join together to create shading and shapes.

Cross-Hatching

When two parallel lines cross to create a shape and features

Tonal Drawing

When the drawings only include black, grey and white. The colours shade from the darkest black and fade over to the lightest white.
